Behavior & Conduct in the Library Policy

Henderson Memorial Public Library
To provide an atmosphere that is orderly, pleasant, and conducive for work, study, and enjoyment; so that library materials and services may be used effectively by all, the library will courteously but firmly enforce the following policy.

Rules of Conduct

  1. No loud talking, profane language, running, or any other behavior annoying or disruptive to others.
  2. Persons using computers in the library may not send receive or display text or graphics which may be reasonably construed as obscene.
  3. No smoking, vaping, or use of other tobacco products in the building.
  4. No alcoholic beverages
  5. No illegal drugs or narcotics.
  6. No loitering in the building or on the grounds
  7. No pets, with the exception of animal aids for the disabled (such as Seeing Eye dogs) and those involved in library-sponsored programs
  8. No selling or solicitation of any kind.
  9. No vandalism/damage to library property.
  10. No weapons!
  11. No rollerblading, skateboarding, or other similar activities on library property.
  12. No inappropriate displays of public affection.
  13. No sleeping!
  14. Shirts and shoes must be worn.
  15. Young children must not be left unattended in the building or on the property.
  16. Any other activity which disrupts the library is prohibited

When these rules are not followed, the following steps will be taken.

  1. Issue a verbal warning, with a statement that the person will be asked to leave if the behavior in question does not cease.
  2. Request that the person leave the building and/or property.
  3.  Call the police!

In the case of a juvenile causing a disruption, staff may also call the parent/guardian.  The juvenile may be barred from the library unless accompanied by a parent/guardian.

A staff member may intervene with a child in order to prevent injury or property damage.

Serious and repeat offenders (adults and juveniles) may be barred from the library for up to one year, and be held responsible for any damage, repairs, and/or cleaning.

Any time a staff member feels that a patron’s behavior is threatening to the safety of other patrons or staff, the staff member will call the police immediately.

An incident report will be completed by the staff member.
